Poem Artwork
-->-Been Out Wandering The Wondrous Woods Again-

“There is no quiet place in the white man's cities.
No place to hear the unfurling of leaves in spring,
Or the rustle of the tiny insect's wings.
The clatter only seems to insult the ears.

And what is there to this life,
If a man cannot hear the cry of the whip-poor-will,
Or the arguments of the frogs around a pond at night?”

Chief Seattle

Although I was born in the big city
I have always been a country boy
Our big cities today, annoy me
I need nature’s solitude and joy

I need to smell the tall old pine trees
I need to hear the tiny whip-poor-will
I need God’s glorious natural Creation
Which still provides me, such a thrill

I need to gaze upon a wildwood lake
And to hear one more yodel of a loon
I need to wander, in the deep forest
And listen to a whip-poor-will’s tune

I need to watch a tiny butterfly, flutter
I need to gaze upon, one more sunset
I need, whatever of Nature, I can find
Nothing in it, has disappointed me yet

I need to hike those old mountain trails
And to observe the wild animals there
I need to smell those wild, wildflowers
Which every Spring, spring up out there

I need to hear those frogs chatter
As I gaze upon my trusty campfire
Being out amongst Nature’s glory
Has always been my greatest desire

You can have your noisy big old cities today
Filled with their traffic jams, smog, and crime
Give me a glorious day and night in the wood
As the whip-poor-will sings for me, so sublime

I am so with you on this - Nature does not disappoint. Nor does it leave us wanting. I too was city-born ...but I could not live there.

Chief Seattle, you and I are brothers in spirit. I'm so glad you escaped the city to honor our canine friends and the countryside with your thoughts.

I love this! No Nature never disappoints, or let's us down....and is there for the taking....I live in a city, but the Riverbank with all it's beauty and wonder is just a five minute walk away....

As I've mentioned before, I live on 7 acres of pristine land ... full of natures best so I understand the value of natures solitude. Nice write.

This speaks volumes to me, Ed! I sooooo get it! There's nothing like the "everything" Mother Nature has to offer absolutely free!

Yes, exactly the poem I need today. Thank you Ed! I was born in New York City and I always dreamed of the country as a boy. There is nothing like starring at a bunch of trees in the wilderness and listening to every chirp, tweet and crackle. It's such a joy this life God created for us. What on earth are we doing living in these square boxes that do not come in touch with the reality of nature? The idea of a MAN cave home appeal to me more every day. If only my wife would agree. Ha! Ha!Ha!

The outdoor adventure of the nature is always good for the human souls. I like the serenity of it too...Like something out of this world...even though such creations of the Lord's are earthly.

Lovely write, Ed!
