Forsaken or Deserted:
An Abandoned Building,
An Abandoned Pet


I see them far too often these days
On my wanderings around our country
Abandoned homes, once filled with love
Abandoned hearts, left behind and lonely

I received yet another extremely sad telephone call yesterday
About some abandoned dogs, inside an old abandoned house
“We hear several puppies crying inside, but we can’t find them;
Do you think that you could come down here and help us out?”

And soon, I was standing inside a dilapidated, crumbling house
That once must have contained love, and laughter, and a family
Yesterday, all I heard were mournful cries, from under the floor
Through a hole in this floor, I spotted numerous newborn puppies

And soon, I heard the sound of their poor mother, whining up at me
She was under this floor as well, starving, yet caring for her puppies
We tore out a piece of the rotting, about to collapse, kitchen flooring
And began pulling out her newborns, so tiny, vulnerable, and hungry

And soon, we had nine adorable, only about a week old canines
Safely tucked into a box, crying out for their mother to feed them
But their mother was far too frightened now, to join her waiting family
So we had to call in some reinforcements to bring her agony to an end

And soon, several compassionate souls arrived with some tools
And now, we began the arduous task of ripping out most of the floor
And eventually, we were able to pull out their devoted mother as well
Now safe, fed, and reunited with her tiny newborn offspring once more

Today, this left behind canine family is being housed at a rescue organization
Who will now care for all of them until these tiny newborns have been weaned
Today, everyone who participated in the rescue of these deserving canine hearts
Is overjoyed for them, but we sadly know that there are many more in our country
