His First Christmas With Us

by Mr. Ed — Read all 1,530 poems by Mr. Ed

Wednesday, December 17, 2014

Poem Artwork
-->“The ache for home,
Lives in all of us.”

Maya Angelou

He is not quite sure yet
What to make of Christmas
I doubt that he has ever had one
He doesn’t know what he’s missed

He was alone and homeless last Christmas
Wandering the mean and frigid city streets
When I finally rescued him, he was starving
But today, he is very loving, and very sweet

And now, when I let him out into our backyard
I can still see a look of apprehension in his eyes
He probably remembers being out there, all alone
He is always the first of our dogs to run back inside

He is now very grateful for a family and for love and kindness
And I can’t wait for Valentino to experience this Christmas Day
He has transformed into an extremely affectionate little lap dog
And inside the warm house with his canine pals, he prefers to play

The ache for home
Lives in all of us,
Especially at Christmas.

Please consider adopting
A homeless dog or cat,
This Holiday Season.

Another example of what this time of year SHOULD be about, instead of the out-of-control consumerism. Thanks for the post.

He certainly has all the trappings of a healthy, warm happy Christmas. Like the old saying, "What a lucky dog!"

Old Cuz Cur can't read apparently, the mutts name is in this story, hope he has a happier Christmas this year than last, & the same for you, Rebecca & the other assorted mutts, waifs, & family you have living with you, not that you would let one other move out there, but Karma will be a payback...-e-
