-->We pride ourselves on being a nation of animal lovers
Yet, each and every day, we kill over five thousand pets
This equates to well over 2 million pet murders every year
It has been going on a long time; I see no real solutions yet
Far too many people refuse to spay and to neuter their own pets
Resulting in more unwanted pets being born, each and every day
Far too many still purchase their pets from breeders and puppy mills
Resulting in enormous shelter euthanasia rates, all across the USA
And there are not nearly enough people willing to foster or to adopt them
To make more room in the overburdened shelters, all across our country
Please resolve to do more for the homeless pets that need some friends
Or these truly horrendous number of murders will go on and on, endlessly
Foster, Adopt, Volunteer – Help Reduce These Tragic Numbers

For sheltered pets, the opposite is true. Puppy mills turn out puppies that have been inbred and are subject to many ailments requiring expensive veterinary services if the pets are to survive at all. There is no natural population control. Puppies are very attractive (like the song, "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window") but quickly grow into dogs with bad habits unforeseen by ignorant puppy buyers. Neutering and splaying is a great solution, but like taking your inoculations, "freedom" allows people to opt out easily.
The only solution to this overpopulation is euthanasia. Sad, but it's true. In time, in order to stop the waste (and I'm not being facetious) we may end up eating them like we do all other domestic animals. Not too long ago, Native Americans did just that. But then, they weren't civilized like us, were they. Why we tried to annihilate them.
