Poem Artwork
-->-Spring Has Finally Sprung-

“In the spring,
At the end of the day,
You should smell like dirt.”

Margaret Atwood

There is something magical about
The wet and wonderful, spring dirt
It smells and feels, so ‘life-renewing’
And, it always fills my heart with mirth

Yesterday had dawned quite marvelously
Spring was finally flirting about in the air
The temperature, it was gloriously rising
I had a powerful yen, to get on ‘out there’

I soon drove to one of my favorite places
A lovely lake, tucked way out in the wood
And, there were not any other souls around
Which made me and my mutts feel real good

Soon, we were at the thawing mud-filled shore
My four extremely eager mutts, jumped right in
Soon, that darn little kid inside of me sprang out
And soon, cool, fresh, lake mud covered my skin

By the time that we finally got home last night
We were all covered in mud, and looked a fright
But our most refreshing muddy spring lake romp
Had filled our now rejuvenated souls with delight

Spring is always such a gloriously good time for me
It always makes me feel like a young, care-free child
And that cool, fresh, wet, mud, was just like an elixir
That soon brought me much needed laughs and smiles

My spouse, our female canines,
And, of course, our numerous cats,
Cannot comprehend our fascination,
With these delightful Spring Mud Baths.

But we like it, we love it, and we want some more of it;
We all try so hard, but we just can't rise above it - Mud!

- The True Elixir of Spring –

We've areas of very sucky mud mixed with soft sand on the harbour beaches around here and can't say I'm as taken as you are to sinking knee-deep in the stuff, Ed. Still, have to believe it's good for the skin the amount beauty parlours charge for wrapping you in such elixirs. Trust you look and feel ten years younger for it! :) xx

...a heart opening sense of positive energy that flows from the beginning of Spring season...and when your inner-child is restored to its joyful being...and true laughter's coming from your soul...and your poems words feel so authentic...Thank you Mr.Ed.

Great write! Cannot say that I have experienced the delight. But I remember my youth and getting full of sand and dirt. I loved it being so close to the earth. Today the closest thing is being in the garden after the rain. Am I getting old? What a pain! LOL!!

You made me recall fishing the sucker run in the spring and trying to find a place along the slippery, muddy riverbank to sit down without getting a wet muddy butt in the process. I'm sure she is delighted when the five of you all come through the door dragging all that mud into the house. That's one thing about living in mud town (Houston used to be called that before Howard Hughes paved the streets), I don't have to deal with that anymore because the whole damn place is either paved over or covered with Astroturf-like St. Augustine grass.
