I’ve been honoring some of my pets
During this ‘Pet Appreciation Week’
And one of the pets that I owe so much to
Is a true and steadfast friend named Buddy

Buddy, the tiny newborn kitten, magically materialized
On my beloved dog Pepper’s backyard grave one day
He began working hard to lift me out of my depression
I owe him a huge debt of gratitude, I could never re-pay

Buddy constantly made me laugh, with his numerous antics
He also taught me that felines can be as devoted as canines
Every night, he insisted on sleeping on the pillow next to me
He always listened when I talked to him, and he never whined

Buddy quickly became my very loyal friend, after my very sad divorce
He inspired me to rescue other dogs and cats in need of new homes
He remained very loyal and right by my side, for 20 wonderful years
I wish there was a way to honor him, with much more than this poem

If you find yourself in need of a friend
Adopt a homeless feline, or a canine
They both provide great companionship
And, their unconditional love, is truly divine
