Five Little Children

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Poverty has many faces, and it can be found almost everywhere you go. Many people point fingers at each other and try to pass the blame, when they should in unison, extend those fingers to form a helping hand. The poem below is real, as are the children in it. If you would like more information on poverty and its causes, the following link may offer you some information in regards. However, this social problem has roots that are deeper than most people know. Some know, but simply refuse to acknowledge the spiritual aspect of it all. http://www.plu.edu/~poverty/perspectives/home.html

Poem Artwork

Five little children, ages one to five,

Living a life of hardship, and struggling to survive.

Pity them now, for no one seems to care,

if they are dressed or fed, or if they are over here, or over there.

Their broken down trailer, is far from being a home,

And in and out of this squalid place, do their three fathers roam.

For hours on end, unimaginable screams can be heard,

and as if the flipping of a switch, there is nothing… not a single word.

Just the other day, the boy of perhaps four,

slipped unawares, through the broken door.

And there he went, running down the street,

As naked as the day he was born,

except for the socks on his feet.

If it were not for the goodness of a minister of God’s word,

He would have kept running, until the tracks he would find,

And if the timing was as such, and the train was on time

the engineers horn would have been the last thing he heard.

Now, as the years go marching by,

and if these little children survive,

what kind of adults will they be?

Will they live long enough to set things right?

Or will they simply repeat, the tumultuous life they now see?

Will these little girls grow old before their time?

and will they, like their mother, become hooked on crack,

will they hustle the streets for a living,

and give comfort to strangers while lying on their back?

And what of the young boy,

will he ever become a man,

Or will he die in the violence

that seems a part of destiny’s hand?

Empathy and anger consume me,

for when I see the suffering in their sad eyes

I want to fight for their chance at life,

Yet, inwardly, I in humilities chaste break down and cry.

This cycle is more than I can fathom,

and I am at a loss on what to do,

For I can not save but one and not another,

For this is bigger than me and you.

 Even still I pray…

That these five little ones,

Will someday….

find their way.

Oh Allen, I can't stop weeping over this one...
Such an emotional write and so true for many
of our little children all over the world.
I write this through tears and prayers that
your voice will be heard, dear friend.

Just as the one little boy you mentioned got "caught" before he
reached disaster on the train tracks, so will God soon step in to
straighten out the mess we see in the world. You are right, J. Allen,
it is far more of a mess than one man, or hundreds of men, can handle by themselves.

Gee Al, just what I needed, a good cry before going to bed...NOT, but I have seen this in every country, including this one, and with all the food and all the luxury we have in this country to have this type of thing here, well it is sickening, to say the least...Eventually, this evening I will be posting a poem, for now called, SLAVERY, you might want to check that out later on, I have to put it all together, but I was incensed by something I saw today and wrote this...hard to believe that poverty and slavery are still around in this the 21st century...an excellent, quite thought provoking write, Al, thanks for posting it, Peace, Ed & Rufuz

This is a great write. I have seen the type of poverty you speak of in Mexico and Central America, working with children in both areas. You capture the topic well. I hope your work touches many.
