Burning Star

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Wednesday, March 31, 2004

I have lived too hard,

I have lived too fast,

And yet somehow,

I thought it would last.

but I now hear the bells

That in reverence toll,

And for whom it is,

I surely know.

For I have traveled,

a bridge too far,

and fought the devil,

on a burning star.

I have tasted sweet victory

And have witnessed early death,

I have seen the world,

in youths gallant quest.

Yet in sadness

I have now laid it to rest.

For I have traveled much too far.

So now, I will just fade to black,

like that once brilliant burning star.
