Trying Times

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

These times are trying

And our children are crying,

Crying for love,

crying to be fed.

For many are the failings

With a new poverty assailing

Crippling with broken hunger,

Breaking youthful spirits asunder,

On danger streets they roam,

Seeking, and searching for a place to call home.

Yet nothing is said,

When another child is found dead,

For the wheel must turn

And profits must earn,

With Wall Street in chatters

Over all that, money matters.

Yet still, the hungry child roams,

searching for love, needing a home.

Oh how in this life we do digress,

For the kings that be, know best.

With a billion here, and a billion there,

Put on better machines that kill with flair.

With young men down, stocks on the rise

Willful killing is fine…in mans eyes?

Oh how these times are trying,

with so many children dying.

I wonder what God will say,

when these kings greet their judgment day.

Will they still confess,

That they were right and knew best,

Or will they simply say,

That they were just mislead,

by the trying times of their day.

Oh Lord, our children are dying,

And it is I, and I alone who is crying.

I confess that I haven't seen a child dying from hunger in America. Oh, I am not saying that there are not those which do, but almost invariably when the facts are known it isn't Wall Street who has had a hand in the starvation, but a more human element, namely their caretakers.

Suffer the little children. This is sad. Much heartfelt.

Hammer, nail, on the head, you penned this one. Could be a song or the starting of a novel...

I have often thought that Americans cause most of their own problems because so many Americans are obsessed with the pursuit of the "American dream" for themselves, but oblivious to the problems of others. The past 4 years have shown that very clearly.

No you are not the only one crying, especially after this write, Al...
I have often wondered if and when the giants of the financial world and the ones who run the world will meet their maker, will they claim innocence or accept responsibility...?

An excellent question on your part and a great way to put it...Peace for the Children, Ed & Rufuz
