Field Of Green (The Journey PT1)

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Saturday, July 3, 2004

Inspired by the sight of an old 1700s era church while traveling this weekend in the low country of South Carolina

Field Of Green

Planted in a field of green….

Lifeless…

Cold….

and forever unseen.

Lie these stones of silenced dreams.

Stones of solemn remembrance,

 stones of forgotten screams..

Church walls that now crumble,

Lay bare with broken pews,

To which vines of nature now greatly humble.

The steeple, which once was straight and upright,

Now lay like a fallen soldier on its broken and jilted side,

No longer pointing to the sky, no longer pointing heavens way,

But into the direction of those, who in field of green reside,

Yes, in the direction, to which the forgotten soul lay.

I like the way you expressed this; very effective in feeling tone and imagery. Having vacationed in the low country more than once, and a history buff, I can visualize and really appreciate the message.

Seems I have read somewhere that if a church spire no longer points towards the heavens, it is no longer considered a place of God or worship...I love it when you see something and can write such a wonderful piece afterwards...I truly loved this one, Al...Peace thru the Write, Ed & Rufuz (Happy 4th)
