West By North West....The Journey Concludes

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The final installment of my journey through the low country of South Carolina and Georgia.

West by North West

Oh Life, she is such a peculiar dame.

She teases and taunts with hints of fame.

She baits my mind with dreams, longings and eternal hope

And pulls me into singular spirals of mirrors and smoke.

Therefore, I stand before this enchanting sea

And grieve the thought of returning to reality.

But Life calls unto me... all the same

Demanding me back from whence I came.

So with the sun of the west pointing the way back

I turn from my beautiful sea and begin my walk up Reality's Track.

Moving on now at a quickened pace

I wink at the setting sun that now smiles upon my face.

For the sun and I know, that Dame Life is fickle

And for only a short time, does she make life so simple.

for her Daughter Reality dances to another song

as Lady Luck pays the piper and lures me along.

So West by North West I must now go

Through sand and pine and timber row,

For it is there that I must speedily return,

to pay of my penitence against that of growing concern.

For I have made a pact with Dame life and her extended family,

That I in responsibility would always concede.

For my dream of peace along this golden shore,

Will have to another day wait, for I owe reality… much more.

So once again…I yield, and bid this sea goodnight.

For my hope, my dreams, have but all faded from my tear filled sight.

Yet someday I shall return…

yes someday…When daughter reality…is not my concern.

West By North West....The Journey Concludes"... and the wind blows...
Through the opening lines it flows:

"LIFE...OH, SHE IS SUCH A PECULIAR DAME!" and a magnificent poem delivers a profound message throughout its lines and to a wise closing:

"YET SOMEDAY I SHALL RETURN...YES SOMEDAY...
WHEN DAUGHTER REALITY IS NOT MY CONCERN!"

Healthy long life, Poet!

Once again the coastline has another lover and the south lends it's fragrance to memory in your poetry. These are beautiful and just as graceful as the Lady that woos you. Excellent...BRAVA!!!

This was wonderful, loved this:

And for only a short time, does she make life so simple.
for her Daughter Reality dances to another song
as Lady Luck pays the piper and lures me along.

ditto what Eileen said, Allen. I loved this series of poems from you - we all live with that struggle between the dream and reality that tugs us back. Here's to the journey!
