                 Sparrows Way

Dark and sinister smiles

Beckon along unmerciful miles

Oh, how they light up sparrow’s way

a place where old gray men, indulge in gin.

and broken soldiers forgotten by time…pray.

For there are so few to care, and so little is known,

About these unfortunates, who call sparrow’s way…their home

Yet, how could just one sinister smile lead them so very wrong,

And deliver unto them this sadness and not life’s beautiful song?

For these poor men in their weakness have sadly lost, their way,

Some from deceptive heart and some by the choices made.

Though some came by choice and others by chance,

They challenged fate and lost, and now to misery, they dance.

However just one click up lonesome sparrows way,

Stands a beacon of hope and a place for the lost to stay.

For it shines through the darkness and gives, these souls hope,

It delivers bread for their broken body and salvation for their soul.

Every evening at six o’clock,

the parson in charge strolls down the block.

He calls and calls unto these men, to come with him

And to put away their drugs and bottles of gin.

Everyday he stands there at the mouth of sparrows way,

And beckons these men to come with him this day.

Yet few if any ever do, but the parson in faith still comes

in the hope of Gods grace saving just one.

Then one day right out of the blue,

When on his evening call, he not only got one… but two.

Now with his spirit totally renewed from this boost in faith

He gave thanks unto God and for two weeks straight, he fasted and prayed.

He prayed that there would no longer be a sparrows way,

He pleaded his cause and begged of His grace.

And then one evening when he left to make his usual six o’clock call,

He saw twenty one men leaning against the missions wall.

He smiled a little and then mouthed a prayer of thanks,

As down the street towards sparrows way, he could make out the sounds of the wrecking ball.

Allen,

Having worked with the homeless for many years now,I can tell this is a poem written by one who knows, one who has seen and most importantly, one who understands. It is our responsibility to give voice and perspective the folks who cannot write on websites like this. Bravo for doing just that!!!

This also reminded me of an old hymn (and one of my favorites) "His Eye Is On The Sparrow". One verse goes like this, "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me."

I agree with everyone else here, outstanding write!!

Extremely powerful and absorbing insight into the homeless and displaced of the world Allen coupled with the power of prayer , which is the deciding factor in any new enterprize....Holy sincere prayer always reaches the ear of the Almighty !
No situation is beyond hope and recovery with God..all we have to do is believe and ask..then wait in absolute faith for the answer , which always appears in clarity at the given time *A*

Allen, I have to say that this screams truth louder than any I've ever read on the subject. An absolute eye opener that should be read by all.
Thank you for sharing.

Was homeless for a short time, even in the homeless world there still is hiarchy! Those that do that drinking and drugs at the bottom. Who would have thought, we were all homeless, but those were shunned even by their own...a well thought out write, Al, this would be cool framed on the wall of any shelter across America and the world...Peace, Ed & Rufuz

Allen, I worked for a short time at a homeless shelter, then later at a network of children's homes, so this brought back pictures of real people to me. Fantastic images. Esp. like your line "some came by choice and others by chance..." Very nice!
