Last Dance

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The following poem is one that I have written to go across the base of my painting that I am doing for Septembers art show. Any suggestions...deletions or sentence structure advice would be welcome. The painting is 24 x 48 and depicts a woman in a black dress emerging from flames, stepping over a skull and onto the head of a snake, thus crushing the snake beneath her feet...I still have a ways to go before the painting is complete, but that is what I have so far....thanks...

Last Dance

I chose not of her company,

Yet she sought mine,

I reveled not in her pleasure

And drank not of her vine.

She danced in darkness

And I in the light,

Yet, I resisted not her calling

When said this was my last dance tonight.

For she is of tomorrow

And I of today,

for when she plays her callings song,

Both you and I have not a choice, but to sing along.

For the days do pass like the blowing of the wind,

And we like seasons come to our timely end.

Yet I fear not this dance

For it is but a whisper, a mere nuance

Of the grand waltz yet to come.

For with my peace made

I in truth shall revel in this promenade.

I will take this chance

When my time comes

For my last dance.

wow, I should have known with your superb poetry that your art would be filled with potent, vivid imagery, rich with contextual layers. love it as is and, like others, would love to see the finished work. hope the painting is progressing as you would like. take care, Dawn

Superb work. I very much enjoyed this poem and many aspects of it had a familial feel about it, almost as if I were personally involved. The mark of a true artist is the ability to personally touch the reader. You've done that here.
Thanks

Absolutely lovely Allen..and the imagery is fantastic..this stunning picture sounds like iti is bristling with symbolism and allegory , which I like ...as regards the poem it is perfect...the only thing I would possibly consider changing is the word nuance to perhaps distraction eh ?...

Dear Allen,

Powerful write depicted here, as no doubt so shall your painting be. I believe that to change too much, is to change the true essence and quality of orignal thoughts. Let your feelings and emotions ride as they initially flowed from your heart. Perfection can not be perfected!!!
