For Beneath My Feet

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Sometimes, the silence and the darkness can be illuminating.

Tuesday, October 12, 2004

For Beneath My Feet

The softness of an Indian summers rain,

falls in the darkness, which calls my name.

So that mighty rivers may rush

Amidst sleeping fields silent, hush.

Yet, still,

I feel,

the hidden pain.

thus I walk alone

in the falling rain.

For beneath my feet,

I hear the children of ages weep.

I listen as they lament in the passage of time

And I feel their anguish

in the secret places of my mind.

For through suffrage of famine,

And torments of war,

Their lives cut short,

to suffer no more.

Yet, still,

In the Indian summers rain,

I hear them crying…

Crying for those who keep dying,

For even beneath my feet,

They still, from ages past,

Continue to weep.

I thought of the Trail of Tears also, and then of course the new children's tears we are adding to the earth. Great work as usual. Thanks.

Is the weeping what brings on the rain or is it the rain itself...? Either way another thoughtful posting, Al, thanks, Ed & Rufuz

To me this counjours up images of 'The trail of tears'. It also brings to mind the long-ignored real story behind the Sioux uprising of 1862. Their souls live on in the quiet forest. Thank you.

the image of the children from every age crying in the earth is striking. this reminds me of one i wrote recently ("children are crying in my head"). often, it is in the midst of the most beautiful moments in nature that i am filled with an almost indescribable sorrow. of course, as Eileen mentions below, the reverse is often true as well. Isn't it something how we can find such beauty even in the midst of sorrow! We can be thankful for that...Take care
