Trust Not The Night

Oh what trust which is lain unto the night,

For sleep with promise of tomorrow

Shall not be in realm of our sight.

As to our slumber, each we go,

With eyes shut tight,

And soft breath, slowed.

All in trust, beneath

 stars tender light,

Yet how should we know,

if our trust to this silence grows.

For many there be,

Which unto death do sleep,

For there is not a way,

Which when called,

Will stay the hand of the dark angel

 to  the coming day.

Oh remember once,

Oh remember when,

The nights rites

Would thus begin….

I lay me down to sleep

I pray the Lord my soul to keep

For if I should die before I wake

I pray the Lord, my soul to take.

So, sleep not tonight,

In blind trust

of tomorrows light,

Yet always remain,

Steadfast in the faith

Of His promise

Of the coming of a better day.

The first prayer I ever said, my mama taught me, was this one. It's true what you say. I pray always before going to bed because tomorrow is not promised. Thanks for sharing this reminder.

Another spiritual gem by you, Allen. Something that touches my soul. I do hope to die in my sleep. I am ready.

A good reminder to always be ready and to be careful in whom/what we place our trust. If we do place our trust in Him, we need not fear. Thank you, J.

An original construction and wonderful message. I loved the last line "Of the coming of a better day"
What we all live for.
Thanks for sharing this.

well, neither of us must trust the night too much or we wouldn't be awake at 3:35am writing poetry :) in all seriousness, this poem said something new to me. it opened my eyes to how often I fall into the "tomorrow's another day" mode rather than putting real trust and real faith in the God who has made me whole. thank you for this, Allen. it is a gift that has renewed my spirit and refreshed my perspective tonight. I mean, this morning....
