The Thief

Dream no more said the thief,

As my spirit was lifted from its sleep

Dream no more said he,

For want of hope has perished

beneath a hollow weeping tree.

For svelte is my way,

In the dead dreams of today.

So run on said the thief,

Lest thy sighing dream

Bring you more…

 not less grief.

For your hope has fallen

Liken unto a broken sky,

As tremblers of your compassion

Shrivel beneath my weight

And die.

So weep no more

 cry not in the night,

Forget thy dreams

For they have taken flight.

For I am the thief said he,

I am the one who has robbed you

Of your peace.

So dream no more

Dream…no more

That thief visits far too many of us - each and every night - but we must fight, and dream, and write, on.

This is profound and unfortunately true sometimes. I awoke this morning with "sleeping on the surface" in my head. I immediately wrote a poem with a similar message as yours, but not as eloquent.

Well I must say that this is a very honest and powerful poem about the characteristics of a liar in that he is a thief.

What do I think of The Thief? I think he's on the prowl everywhere, that he's the master of illusion who would rob us of one of life's abundant sources of joy. Dream on, Allen. Dream on.
