Coming And Going

I have… through clear vision seen

the coming and goings of my time.

For I in my silent witness must concede

that the life of my occasion has indeed been lean.

For on the other side of this looking glass,

stood the ghostly visages of my not too distant past.

For there was my Mother and grandmother too

Standing, with faces of ash… waving, waving from afar,

And there too, was my cousin Cindy

with her funny hat and sad sad smile.

Yet, she stood alone in abject dejection

on the black unforgiving abyss of a dying star.

I quickly turned my head from this surreal scene

And tried in vain to gather in this unruly dream.

Yet, standing against the opposite wall,

stood another looking glass twice as tall.

And within its mahogany frame

Gazed a reflection, which bore no name.

Yet no name was needed, for I knew him well

He was me…and I was him…

Trapped and bound to that future place

to which I would soon dwell.

I turned back to the other glass

hoping to see my mother, to look at my past.

However, the mirror was empty, all cold and black.

Nowhere left to turn, no where to run,

So I aborted yesterday

and turned to face that which is yet to be done.

So to turn I did, to face the face without a name

And I did so with grievance, for I saw the coming of pain.

With bones a brittle and sunken eyes

Suffering was evident in my coming demise.

So forward, I shall march, into what is no longer unknown,

For my past is what it is…like the ghost of my mother…gone.

and my future I now know…through this vision / nightmare/ dream.

That my life, my coming…and my going

has now been seen.

an absolutely brilliant poem about a haunting event. all we can do is live each day to its fullest. i used to have terrible nightmares about my own death... in my 20s! I was convinced I'd be dead at 30, to the point that I was literally in shock when I made it to 31. ironically, my 30s were tumultuous and painful but remarkable creative and led me to a higher level of being / self-understanding, similar to what Jude says below. anyway, excellent poem. take care, ok?

though this poem may appear disturbing, it contains the power of enlightenment ... sometimes our demise is actually our birth ...
i think it is a outstanding flow of creative thought ... the unknown is exciting and we have much to learn from it ...

this is very thought provoking...if we could really see our own demise, would it make it easier or much harder...i guess i prefer the unknown

Allen, this is so profound and sorrowful. But it is delicate and beautiful in its disturbing thoughts. My heart goes out to you.

A truly deep and chilling poem, J. Allen. The past is the past, but hopefully, the future is yet unwritten.

Man, Al, this is heavy, a dream I hope, no vision of a future for you, for you are too needed right here...Ed & Rufuz

I must say that this is one of the best poems yet on this subject. I have to read this over several times like Eileen said.

J Allen this has to be one of the best poems in this genre I've ever read!I hardly know what to say...it is so powerful, distressing,
frightening, it runs the gamut of emotions...Yet it's so good I have to read it again...I only hope and pray your dream was just that, and is many, many, years into the future...I know I've had similar portentous dreams in years past, I'm still here;-)

Love, Eileen
