Grow Little Tree, Grow

I planted a tree today…but not for you, not for me.

For unto this sapling with roots so thin and fine,

grows forth my hope of revelation at some future time.

For buried beneath this tiny, twiggy little tree,

Lay a treasure hidden beneath its ball…

placed there with such precision and care by me.

For in a steel box which measures about six by nine,

I placed a few precious memories to be gathered in a distant time.

As there within its steely skin…all wrapped in plastic and neatly pinned,

Are photos galore of our once small children at play

As they in their simple innocence look into the future in a different way.

Then there is a picture or two of just me and my wife,

Some coins and documents, which detail our life.

there is even  a copy of my book… Before Darkness Falls,

which perhaps in a hundred years, will at last find its call.

There is even a list of all my friends, even those of you here in the Den.

I even placed in this box, a cassette tape of the rolling stones,

and a CD of Pink Floyd and of Dr. Hook.

So now, as unto the constant of time when this tiny tree grows

With its branches reaching forever into an always changing sky,

Ten years…twenty…thirty…maybe more and then we are gone.

When its roots grow old and huge and burst high above the eroding ground,

It is then, perhaps in the year of 3035…

that my hidden treasure will be found.

And what will this hidden treasure to the future say?

Maybe nothing more…maybe nothing less

Other than, another soul once came this way.

For mankind since the beginning of time,

Has is some form or fashion attempted to cheat mortality

By leaving a little something of themselves behind.

So

   Grow

           Little

                   Tree

                          Grow

                    Tall

             And

      Old

           For

                Me

Hate to say it, but that little tree may grow to become a very large one and its roots may hold onto your little box and quite possibly grow through it, keeping it in its fold, so that even future generations may not get to see what you have so lovingly buried with it...isn't it also kinda funny to think that your book, although it may not be a welcome site on the bookstands now, may become for future generations a welcomed site as it tells of life & love from the past...I'd like to be there when and if it is ever dug up...such memories you are making for your future family...Ed & Rufuz

Such introspection as this and such a deep philosophy for the future of mankind. This one is very impressive Allen and so exceptional as only you could have made it.

Allen:

This one is filled with wonderful memories. Times do run fast, sometimes it is hard for us to catch up with its speed and its rhythm.

Well-done.

I echo Dawn Allen! What a grand gesture, and I hope whomever discovers it will in turn continue the story with their own!
Imagine it coming back to you in the next realm;-) How cool is that!

Oh, Allen, this just makes my heart burst open with joy for you and that little tree that WILL grow and for whomever may discover your box of memories one day. A terrific offering, this poem and your kind spirit living full in this life. Dawn
