While I was Away...Response to Leah's Poem

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

This was written in response to my wife Leah's poem last night entitled (Glad You Are Gone)...I write this in jest...for Leah in reality knew what was best...but still :(

Thursday, July 21, 2005

While I was Away

You stood tall and full of summer's grace,

Your presence brought many a smile to this old mans face.

Your beauty was exquisite and your charm filled the night air.

I was enraptured, enthralled and captivated by your flair.

Yet to my horror, and to my silent and woeful dismay,

While I was gone…while I was at work, someone stole you away.

They came into my life like a thief into a starry night,

And with hands so deft…they took your precious life.

I stand now in somber silence on the deck out beside my pool,

And I just stare into the open space not knowing what to do.

For there below…just a few feet away

Is the sad reminder of this new and appalling day.

I shiver with the mere thoughts of your sad demise,

As I with new clarity, view the full moon with teary eyes.

I look down to where you stood and spy a glimpse of your woeful remains

I see your broken limbs scattered all about the ground

I see the moon as it glistens amidst your clear life giving stains.

Yes…you once stood proud and tall…

But all it took was a few bucks and a tree cutter call.

Oh, woe is me…

For while I was at work….

Someone came and

 killed…murdered…annihilated

My beautiful tree.

This is so typical Allen, of how when mates have differences they do their best to accomadate each other. I'm sure Leah did what was best, but it sounds like you really wanted to keep the tree;-) Excellent poem.

The loss of a tree,
May not be,
To some, such a loss, like Le, (ah)
But the day will come when she,
Will be paid back for allowing that tree to become just so much debris...ed

Well done. I saw the devastation of our parks and forests when hurricane Juan raped our Nova Scotia coastline a few years back. It changed forever the landmarks and place I had grown up in.

Gosh! You had me thinking Leah was a person...until the last line! Still it was very sad to have a tree that you loved being butchered and cut to pieces by uncaring individuals. Some of us are very attached to our plants.

Wonderful write, though it is sad!

*Sigh* The same instance occured one day while I at work. Only a pile of remains were left in the front yard. Very sad.

If a Ménage à trois there has to be, then count the moon, then you, then me. (a much better arrangement) (NEVER that tree)(not anymore) kiss, kiss. Leah
