Letting Go ?????

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Too many times we cling to that which no longer can be.
We search in vain for what it once was to be lose and free.
While fond memories are good and nice to be had…
its when we hold on to the past…never letting go,
that we fail to understand how this to our state of mind can be bad.

Letting Go???

Pushing sixty doesn’t mean what it used to mean

Back when living was fast and life was a scream.

Some… I still see search on for that magic carpet ride,

as they brush back their strands of thinning gray

and creep slowly up onto the seat of their 1970 Super Glide.

Yet, dreams still live strong in the back of their mind,

back when, back then, back in another day and time.

Dreams of freedom flowing free like the wind in their hair,

Oh dreams of California dreaming and days without care.

Yet it is plain to see…he aint now the man he used to be,

His back always hurts and something on his body no longer work

and now he takes not recreational, but maintenance drugs.

I wonder now as I watch from him from a distance

as he searches on for that gone forever elusive dream,

I watch and wonder if he really remembers…

that freedom truly is just another word for nothing left to lose.

One of my all time favorite here…
ME & BOBBY MCGEE
Janis Joplin
Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin' for a train
And I's feelin' near as faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained
It rode us all the way into New Orleans
I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana
I's playin' soft while Bobby sang the blues, yeah
Windshield wipers slappin' time, I's holdin' Bobby's hand in mine
We sang every song that driver knew, yeah
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin' don't mean nothin' hon' if it ain't free, no no
And feelin' good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
You know, feelin' good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee
From the Kentucky coal mine to the California sun
There Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Through all kinds of weather, through everything we done
Yeah, Bobby baby kept me from the cold
One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away
He's lookin' for that home and I hope he finds it
But I'd trade all o' my tomorrows for one single yesterday
To be holdin' Bobby's body next to mine
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin', that's all that Bobby left me, yeah
But if feelin' good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
Hey, feelin' good was good enough for me, mm-hmm
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee
La-da-da  La-da-da-da  La-da-da da-da da-da
La-da-da da-la-da la-da, Bobby McGee, yeah
La-da-la-da-la-da  La-da-la-da-da
La-da-la-da-la-la, Bobby McGee, yeah
La-da-da  La-da-da La da-da La da-da
La-da-da La da-da La da-da
Hey, my Bobby, Lord, my Bobby McGee, yeah
Lo-da-lo  da-la-lo-da-la
Lo-da-la-lo  da-la-lo la-la-lo la-la-lo la-la
Hey, my Bobby, Lord, my Bobby McGee, yeah
Lord, I call him my lover, call him my man
I said I call him my lover, did the best I can, c'mon
Hey now Bobby now, hey now Bobby McGee, yeah
La-da la-da la-da la-da la-da la-da la-da la-la
Hey, hey, hey, Bobby McGee, Lord!
 La-da la-da la-da la-da la-da la-da la-da la
Hey, hey, hey, Bobby McGee, yeah

One of the first I learned to blow a harp with the song. I agree, there are sooooo many that can't figure out that their age isn't the problem, but rather their heart, and gratitude for life. Art
Great write and keep setting the example, brother.

Sadly a lot of people waste so much time chasing yesterday's dreams, not realizing that today holds so much that could make wonderful memories tomorrow. A great write!

Aging scares alot of people and the trick is to not pay attention to the negatives anymore. Live young and energy will come. I wonder of Bobbi McGee and where he really was back in those Joplin days.

Funny that is one of mine as well, and at 54 I just bought my first motercycle and yes I plan to cruise it on down the highway as long as I can but I do not think I am searching for lost dreams, instead I am chasing new ones. I do not have long grey hair wisps though in the wind I shaved my head completely, I do take prescription drugs and not illusion ones and I do have the occasional aches and pains but I do still have lots to lose. That being said I believe life is for the living wether you be 25 or 75 do what you can and enjoy the time God gives you. I have seen too many friends and family lay back on a couch and watch their last days run out in soap operas and to me that is not living only surviving. Quoting another oldie but one of my favorites "Get out on the highway...get your moter running"

I dunno, does anyone ever really let go of the times in their life when they caught a glimpse of the elusive freedom. I don't think so, not after listening to an old grandfather for years talk about his good old days, then my father, my brother, and I even hear myself rabbiting on haha.
It's like a candle we light, that reminds us of times we associate with happy moments. I dont think it does us any harm to take a trip down memory lane now and then, so long as we know when to come back lol. I actually think that 60's, 70's, 80's theme party nights are a good way to really blow it out your ear, just for one night. SO long as we lose the wig afterwards, eeeek.
Triffic write, loved it.

This is excellent and I am so glad you wrote it. If a person doesn't move on, they never grow spiritually. They don't open themselves up to the present and the joys it brings. I get depressed when I see someone trying to relive the past. Even when they are stuck on that same old music. I'm sixty-one and I like the new music. Contemporary Christian and lots of other styles. I've been thinking a lot lately about heaven and how I'm on the downhill slide. I can't double my age anymore and live that many more years. But I am still happy it's now. Thank you, Allen for this offering.

Allen

You bring it all home with this nostalgic and sentimental pen...
The late and great Janis Joplin lived a riotous life, but at least she fully lived each day of her life !
