By His Grace

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

I may be going away for awhile, I don’t know just yet, but of this I wanted to say…

They say that confession is good for the soul, but I think it is by our testimony, that we are made whole.

For I have walked a thousand ugly miles in this life. I have challenged the darkness and only by unknown grace did I survive. For it was in the darkest of my days oh so many years ago that I gave unto the demons their chase. I have looked down the barrels of guns and walked with hand in hand with destruction. I survived being tossed down a three story flight and survived a bloody assault in which my four opponents wielded knives. I was lost to the wickedness of an unforgiving world and I knew not what joy living a sanctified life could bring. It was not that I wasn’t taught right from wrong; I was taught from my very early in youth the way of light. You see, I came from a family who in earnest did truly believe. Yet I with corruption in my heart rebelled and went my own separate and desperate way. Even still, there were those who in their love would not give up on me. Grandma and Grandpa both fervently for me did pray. Years and years passed filled with ever mounting despair, nothing changed in my life except that the darkness became more than I could bear. Death came in went to many that I knew from my youth. Many, oh so many of those so called friends now lie beneath an unforgiving ground. They now in their eternal darkness no longer give chase to the wickedness of their ways. Then time being as time is… both Grandma and Grandpa passed away, yet their prayers did not end with them, they just manifested in another way. This was when I met Leah my wife to be all those years ago…and where grandma left off…Leah took over the show. She prayed long and hard and wept into many a bitter night…yet she never on me gave up, and I soon could see the light. Therefore I to this confess… It is by the grace of God, that I now have rest…

By His Grace

If it were not for the grace of God in my life

If it were not for His strong and unseen hand

then long ago my days would have parted from the living

and come quickly into the valley of darkness and its ready end.

For I have seen so much evil and I have looked it straight in the eye,

I have ignored the sound and honest advice of others

only to find myself in a dire most horrid straight getting ready to die.

I have stood in the darkest of corners and have seen the evils of life.

I have in true ignorance danced to hell’s music with the devil by my side.

Yet by supplications of others to a merciful God on my unworthy behalf,

I was able to cheat the hand of death many times over and find a peace unsurpassed.

For He in His mercy, for He in his eternal love,

extended unto me the number of my days.

He allowed me to partake in life’s beauty by the sure wholeness of His grace.

Therefore as I look back over these troubled and numbered years,

I can see how my wayward life had for many brought scores of tears.

I repent now the sadness to others that I surly did bring,

and I prayed many times over for their forgiveness,

though they now rest where the angels sing.

Alas though, redemption is as is… whole and complete,

The past is just that, a history through wisdom not to repeat.

And as it is with each new stone unturned,

we find new lessons of life in which to learn.

And if there is but one thing of this journey that I truly do see…

It is what He has done in this life for me.

Therefore stand tall and of your own hidden past do not grieve, for what He can do for others, He can do for thee… If only by chance you dare but believe.

Through this beautiful and honest piece, you have written my life story. Isn't it the most wonderful feeling to be in the now with God? I think back on my wildness and can't even believe that was me. I too came from a believing family but wanted no part of it until about 25 years ago. God Bless you and Leah on your journey.

Beautiful and deeply moving.

Time away from any kind of sameness often brings springs and rivers of refreshing that cleanse and reinvigorate the heart, mind, and soul. May Jesus Christ be your helmsman and may the wind of the Holy Spirit fill your sails as you move into your next adventure. His grace moves in mysterious ways!

May you and Leah have a wonderful and idyllic sabbatical by the Grace of God..
Come back refreshed and invigorated in the Lord, my dear friend..
Your life story reminded me of a song by the late and great Patsy Cline..." He Will Do For You...What He Has Done For Me "..

" Once my soul was in sin
And my heart was in shame
I didn't know Jesus
Not even His name
Then I heard a voice say
Won't you come unto me
And He will do for you
What He's done for me
Give Him a chance
And let Him show you
He'll answer when you call
His love is the sweetest
His promise is free
For He will do for you
What He's done for me
Give Him a chance
And let Him prove it
His love is best of all
Give Him a chance
And let Him show you
He'll answer when you call
His love is sweetest
His promise is free
For He will do for you
What He's done for me "

Allen, I share your views on testimony and I have been blessed to read your today and be reminded of grace, that puzzling 5-letter mystery that is the gift of God to all who open their hands and eyes and heart to receive. You are such a treasure and I don't even know you, but it is because you live so authentically and openly that we all feel we do know you. Wherever you may go, go in grace and feel the love of all you leave behind and all who will surely meet you on your way. Dawn
