Too Late

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

When I was but a young lad of about eight, my father once sent me to the wake of my best friend’s dad. I told him that this was not something that I cared to do, but he insisted in saying…”Boy, if you live long enough, this is a task that you will repeat many, many times over.” It was a lesson in living that he to me was trying to proclaim. I will never forget that day as I looked into the eyes of my best friend…Even now, I remember the words of my Dad and have come to the realization that I have seen too much and often times it’s too late.

Too Late

My eyes have seen too much

And my heart has wept a thousand tears.

I have watched pathetically from a scarred distance

Unable to quell my realist fears.

Here today and gone tomorrow,

 Another passing, another sorrow.

Ahh, but to age now in grace,

Is to age another arduous day,

Only to lose yet, one more familiar face.

He was only 44

Yet he was, and is no more.

I worked with him for 16 years

through toil and trouble,

through blood sweat and tears.

Now some may say…this is just the way of life’s game,

yet to this burden I must profess,

to him who is mo more

of heavenly matters I could not impress.

And now…oh now it is too late,

for as he took of breath just yesterday

tonight he shall enter into darkness gate.

Oh…I have seen too much

and for him….it is too late.

Some ears are open to advice and some are dumb to it.

As long as there is tomorrow nothing is "too late". When the ears are closed to living in the physical sense then...too late matters more.

J. Allen...I hear you, my Brother......some WILL NOT hear.

God help us all to try harder, as we rapidly near the Day of the LORD!

Good, sound, thought-provoking write, J. Allen...and I share your pain.

I concur with Birgit and Roger below completely..
Sometimes the end is abrupt and without warning
May God bless his soul and grant him repose..

This was a beautiful piece. I am sure it captures the greiving of a person who has lost someone.
Sad, yes. We miss our friends and our loved ones. I have lost my mother, father and a brother and to many friends. One thing I may say, though. If you have faith you know the darkness for him turns to the beautiful light. To late? He will never be late again.
God Bless,
Lew
