How Many Times Have I Come This Way?

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Just a few rambling thoughts of an introspectively self-abasing look into the times of my time. I go to work…I go home and I can’t help but wonder where my days under the sun have gone have. What I ask myself is what have I accomplished other than meager living. No great achievements are unfurled for the benefit of man, nothing really tangible at all that I can see. I have over the years with empathy reached out to lend a hand if I could to those in need. Somehow thinking I was doing what I was supposed to do, yet I continually fail to see fruit in my labor for others who had need. So I continue on, I punch the clock another day, I go on, yet I somehow sense that even that will all soon stop. (He who is first shall be last and he that is last; first)….

How Many Times Have I Come This Way?

The air was cold as I walked into the door at work today.
I wondered aloud now how many years I have came this way.
How many times have my feet tread this worn concrete path?
How many days remain before I like others retreat into the past?

There are pines that now grow full and tall in the field behind our plant.
Yet when to this place I first came, they were but meager saplings of chance.
So it is to this point of reflection that I have at last come, yet still just another day.
I wonder… Oh how I wonder in all these years working six and seven days…
Just how many dreams have I by not being free; how many dreams have I let slip away?

There is no way to measure this un-traveled road, nor is there a way in which to tell.
For what dreams have escaped is not mine to wonder as in the past I shouldn’t dwell.
What was then is no longer now and what will be is only for the future to see.
Therefore I punch the clock once again, and stroll past new and young faces.
I smell the smells, I hear the machinery whine, I pass unnoticed, just counting my time.

In my office now am I secure; away from the machinery's roar.
I pause to again reflect; and I wonder if to this life there is more.
Who have I touched, and what have I after all the years done?
I have seen so many come, and so many go and to what end?
Shall I ever see fulfillment in my days of vanity under the sun?

The clock continues on, the hands of irrecoverable time begin to groan.
Soon, oh all to soon there will be no clock in my day.
No missions left to complete, no meetings to come my way.
Over and out… now signing off…with new faces in a new day…
how many times have I come this way?

Same page was purpose for my absence this week......... i often travel and relive same things in out every day all years and I started to question my worth, values, my fruit produced from it all. I seeked the Higher Counsel of Jesus as to his will for me. I am returned had a productive week with the mission fields here in states. And I wait now for my next call. I look at my life different now. This poem reminded me of a week of seeking thank you for this encouragement.

Blessings,
joselyn

This is what so many of us think my friend, but cannot put into words as you did so gracously. God has a purpose for us all. You will never know the smile you left on someone's face, or the happiness you left as you helped someone in need. You are indeed a special person.

Excellent write!

This is self-reflection at its best, J. Allen. It does make us want to make the most of each hour and day we have left. Well done!
