A New Home In The Sun

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

We wait and see now as yet another friend has been handed the sentence of death by the doctors just this week. The influx of those passing has brought about much searching of this heart of mine with many conclusions being made.

Ecclesiastes 7:2
“It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.”

A New Home In The Sun.

As I grow older in these my days which are under the sun.

I have seen so many which to this race is done.

I watch alienated as these flames of life burn low.

I with silent regret watch as to their end slip and go.

This foreknowledge of these things which are sure to come

Has for many years brought both sorrow and consternation to my heart.

I have bore witness to both old and young as they come undone.

And I have carried their bones to rest beneath a winter’s sun.

So bitter became I of so many peoples untimely demise

That I happen sore in these travails of the heart and mind.

I’ve pondered on these dark thoughts that we only live to die,

Yet through a soft knowing whisper in my heart I finally came to realize.

We do not live just to die; we die in order that we may truly live.

Philippians 1:21 “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

we die in order that we may truly live.

I believe that's true, yet I also believe that very many never truly learn how to live.
