The Bus Stop
Back Oh so long ago when our hearts were young
And our ways as capricious as the wind doth blow.
I stood tall and full of vim beneath an old bus stop sign.
It was here on the bus and we met for the very first time
There was smell of diesel, and the sound of squealing brakes.
Then the large city bus ground to a halt and opened its gate.
I climbed aboard the hulking mass and offered up my fare.
I took a seat near the front and scanned the bus to see who else was there.
Looking down the aisle three rows back a pair of shapely legs caught my eye.
I looked them up and down real slow and found them attached to a girl I wanted to know.
She was wearing this tiny little sailor outfit with a hem that went way up to there.
She saw me looking and cut me a quick little smile; embarrassed I looked away back up the aisle.
My heart was pounding and tiny beads of moisture emerged on my forehead.
Here I was on this big old bus, and there she was with a smile that said…...
The bus then turned and shifted and came to another screeching stop.
This was where I was to get off, question was…would I or would I not.
I remained seated as the gate hissed open; I reached in my pocket and dropped another token.
Two more stops, maybe three, almost everyone was gone but her and me.
I dried my palms and walked back her way, I mumbled something about is this seat taken,
She smiled again and said no and slid over for me to sit down, the bus then surged and I hit the ground.
Feeling like a fool and wanting to now run, I figured she was laughing at me and having fun.
Yet to my surprise she was now kneeling beside me…”are you OK?” I heard her say.
Unable to speak I just shook my head, here was an angel kneeling beside me, I thought I must be dead.
Getting back to my feet now with nothing hurt but my pride, I sat down beside her and softly sighed.
“Where are you going” I managed to say, she smiled once more and simply said “Your way”
We talked and talked, we shared our lives, and we ended up riding the entire loop from nine to five.
She gave me her number and as she got up to walk away, she wiggled a little and said…are you coming…are you going to stay? Needless to say I got up and went…now many, many years later
I must say…THAT BUS RIDE WAS THE BEST DOLLAR I EVER SPENT…she became my wife and yall all know her as Leah.
