Weep For Her

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The recent heat wave and drought that has stricken the south has reminded me how helpless and dependent on the earth we humans really are. Our trees are dying; the fields once green are brown, dead tinderboxes. Our average temperatures for August are 88° for highs, yet this month thus far has yielded many days of 100° plus with one consecutive week of 102° to 105°. The average rainfall is 46.5 inches for the year. However this year it has only seen only 14 inches with only .40 inches this month. I’m very aware that nature will through its cycle’s change the earth in many ways. Places that were once fertile become dustbowls and barren plains. I know she constantly changes as she has for many thousands of years. Yet I know that man also is a factor in the equation and that if he that lives for just the moment he sows hardships and destruction for those who will come after him….

Weep For Her

Weep hard and long into the night for the earth.

For she has no more tears in which to cry.

Once vibrant streams now muster but a trickle.

Others have given up the ghost and died.

For this fertile soil which once lay beneath my feet.

Now is but blowing dust running down an empty street.

So weep for her utterly since she weeps no more.

Weep for this our earth as she prepares to take her leave.

For of this and as I speak she delivers forth in woes and pangs.

Scourges left by man, onslaughts of diversity in droughts and torrential rains.

So how can it not be when man in his greed asks of these calamities…Why?

Can he not see or has his gluttonous ways caused himself to grow evermore blind.

Nay, we shall not ever see, for even though it was written, its part of our pre-destiny.

It truly amazes me that so many still cannot see the harm we've done to our Mother Earth, and within less than 200 years. Maybe it very sadly is, Pre Destiny.

Well said. I love the imagery you have painted in this work. Very well done.

That sums it all up. My daughter was just saying the other day that the changes in our earth are expected but man has literally increased the problem. Forest fires are a natual cleaning process of the Earth yet when we keep cutting down forests to build more shopping malls and housing projects those fires come as a disaster rather than natures cleaning process. Will we learn? I guess Christ told us the answer is a resounding "NO"
Let us all pray for the hand of God to move upon this earth. That is our only hope.
God Bless,
Lew
