Shallow & Broken

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

“There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. Then said I,

Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.”

Shallow & Broken

Mindless banter, useless dribbles some say; only… only eyes fail to see.
Words earnest spill forth; nonsensical that some say bring forth no thought.

Few listen though; even fewer heed the warnings of such a simple call.

Worry not now with these hands clean, washed by the blood that dribble wrought.

Again there rises no sense to these words that fall haplessly and to come into play.

For crashing are the sorrowful souls I see which pound the dark rocks below.

This
witness came forth pure and unabashed; too late now for them of this day.

How
shallow and broken; misunderstood; this heart should feel no shame.

But it does, and it doesn’t, for many scoffed and calling it a fool’s game.

So why go on when pearls fall from tired lips only to be trounced underfoot?
Shush now cried the old man, you don’t hear and you never understood.

Therefore why trouble this already weary and burdened soul?
When words fill the skies for naught and vision paint pictures so bold.
Should not this mind just lay to rest the quiet passage of the day.
Should not solace be found in the quietness when this mindless banter fades away?

Lovely phrasing, soothing pacing, and very suitable word selection. I enjoyed reading this piece from beginning to end. Well done!

pearls before swine? maybe its not that some dont understand, but that we do, and it hits entirely too close for comfort. . .
this is so quietly daring. .a wayfaring wanderer bringing something much deeper than words, a tattoo for the heart and how it should beat. ..free and sp[irited; bold and compassionate; loving and welcoming. ..
your words are just. ..
*sigh. ..
i dont really have words for yours. .
