Blinking Before “Echo”

One slip

One failed goodbye.

Gone forever

in the blink of an eye.

Doesn’t matter,

Never really did.

For Un-Lasting is the last gasp

just before they slam the lid.

No flowers, no silly dreams

Just silence; dark silence

filled with inward screams.

Days afore rush the closing mind.

The hours; the minutes crashing

days no more; absence of time.

One slip

One failed goodbye.

No one notices

Few even care.

For “Narcissus” surrenders in his mind

“Echo” laughs now on reflections dried.

Nevermore to himself is he now to preen.

for lasting is the guilt to compensate the dream.

“Echo” fades; she smiles…one slip, one blink….now he dies.

A wonderful pen, stretching metaphors back in time, reaching a crescento of sadness, when the curtain calls, it happens all too often. Blessings! Jasmin Horst

Once again, Allen, you've written a profound, thought-provoking poem. Great stuff!

Allen, this stole my heart today and put tears in my eyes. This is sad & heart rendering but oh, so true. When the final closing of the lid vacuums and causes the echo, finality is a sure thing and there's no way out because we meet our end.

Stunning write, J Allen, dark, haunting lines ... almost claustrophobic. But so well penned! Brilliant!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

my favourite myth; narcissus and echo, and how she is forever calling out, never changing, just slightly fading reiterating our wants and desires. ..
but narcissus was too outward, which one would think might be good, except he failed to SEE:: others in any form/shape/meaning. ..
and death will only reverberate in our souls, leaving us looking at what should have been unless we do [for the least of these]. ..
waiting for those daffodils in the spring; a resurrection of something along the banks of hope
[oh dear rambled again]
this piece is so perfect in allegory and ties. . . triumphant and tried...
masterful ~

Allen, a lot of work in this write...dark, powerful and truthful. Death, it seems is always final.

Peace,
Dan
