The Wooded Path

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The poem below was first written for my dad circa 1966 when I was a child.
As a child I would often write poetry for my dad and leave it taped to the fridge for him to read before leaving for work. He once admonished me in that I should try and write about happy and pretty things. Therefore the following attempt was penned circa 1966 and even it this, I could not pull it off without including the entire cycle of life. I saw things in a different eye then as I do now.

It was if as a child, the finality of things spoke to my heart and showed me life in its entire beauty. Yes things were very beautiful, and life in my country surroundings bloomed majestically. However it was through the metaphorically dark winter that I was able to truly see the beauty of life and its entire cycle. Even today as I myself grow into the latter stages of life’s cycle, I can see the entireness of it all as it speaks to me in the birth of a child, the budding of a tree, and yes, even in the withering stalk of a flower as it lay on a cold, snowy wooded path….

The Wooded Path

Winter is gone; now comes spring,

full of life’s colours and beautiful things.

The sweet summer sun shines down the wooded path.

Yet leaves start to change; leaving clues; nothings meant to last.

Cold winds now blow bringing with it blankets her of snow.

The flowers which were on the wooded path now lay withered and dried.

Reminding me in all things, that which once was beautiful has now died

See, nothing is meant to last, not here, nor there, not even on the wooded path.

J. Allen Wilson…. 1st penned circa 1966

Allen, this carries a powerful message...no, nothing lives forever, but renewal from seeds produces life again. Loved this!

Will although the message is rather dark and intense it proves it's own existance for those words themselves have survived.

There was a lot of wisdom in your young pen, way back then. Nice work.
