Cool Change

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

We have just returned from our magical journey and I must say strange things did so occur…..JUST HAVING FUN

Sometimes it is just good to get away and have some fun. This past Saturday Leah and I departed for the forest of fun and dreams. The past six months prior to this journey have been trying and complicated. Many things have transpired that has tested our faith; hope and dreams. However this week I felt it was time to just let go and have some fun, and what better place to do this than alone in the middle of four hundred acres of forest and swamp with daily sightings of alligator and nightly and up close visits from two juvenile owls. So for this week and this week alone, I have decided to reinvent my self; after all...it is way past time for a COOL CHANGE.

Cool Change

Time stood still and lingered on a thousand trees.

Inspirations fell anew and wild as I reinvented me.

I am always serious; always with some trouble on my mind.

Though I felt the time had come for a cool change that caressed sublime.

So over the hills and through the many woods of Carolina we did gleefully roll.

Across sleeping rivers and smiling streams; to natures dream came we to extol.

There I climbed trees; ate of their leaves and found strange many things in time.

Then...something odd began to take place; poor Leah thought I had lost my mind.

I found myself moved as if by magic to an ancient and far away land.

I fashioned spears from sticks and stones; I stalked lizards through the sand.

I drank swamp water from stagnant streams and slept in the cover of green.

I found myself outside of myself as if captured by a never ending dream.

In the beginning Leah was concerned, yet after a day or two she surrendered to my yearn.

And yet just today when I awoke, I found myself beneath the dark stones of an old river bed.

It was then that I found that my looks had changed; I had sprung new growth upon my head.

Ample hair now covered my once balding pate; had to be the swamp water, or all those lizards I ate.

As you can see from the collection of photographs Leah took.

Wilderness living becomes me and fits me as comfortable as an old glove.

So think as I may, and ponder the fate of the world this day as I might.

Happenstance in these woods of grace has at least for now freed me from the darkest night.

From the photos, it appears as if you are caught in some kind of 'zen ' moment, which can be good. Congratulations on reinventing yourself. Enjoy the journey.

Cheers,
Dan

Dude, it looks like you overdosed on Rogaine...Even Rufuz is jealous of that head of hair, so stay renewed, stay refreshed and gain inspiration from each and everyday...I'm behind ya 100%...love to Leah and friendship to you both...Ed & Rufuz

Allen,

Just the break you needed: renewal! Refreshment! Inspiration! But I didn't know they had gators in California ... glad you're back, hope Leah is better - and give China a (((HUG))) and a pat from me. :)

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

'Time stood still and lingered on a thousand trees.

Brilliant write and a fantastic sharing with us Dear J!
I felt with you on every line, and thought you were in for a physical rebirth too, when you wrote:
'And yet just today when I awoke, I found myself beneath the dark stones of an old river bed.
It was then that I found that my looks had changed; I had sprung new growth upon my head.'
Thanks for the pics too!! Loved it all!
Love, Suzie :-D
