Trading Yesterday For Another Tomorrow

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

I just wanted to add in a short prologue before the poem tonight as these thought lay heavy on my heart. For the entirety of my married life with Leah I have worked incessantly to get ahead and provide for my family sometimes even putting in seventy plus hours a week. I think back now in retrospect of all that time away from home and realize that I should have put priorities in order. Sure some of that time was mandatory, but a great deal of it was in my blind eagerness to advance in position and stature.

If I were to add all that non-required time together I wonder how many months or even years could have been spent at home with Leah. The sad thing is that that time can never be regained; it is lost forever and shall not return. When I look around me now I see another crop of young people coming into the workforce with that same zeal and that glint of achievement in their eyes. Please don’t misconstrue what I am saying for one must work to provide a home for their loved ones. I am just saying to take a moment to evaluate priorities, for once that time is lost; you may too find yourself saying that
“I wish I had some of those yesterdays back to apply to your tomorrows”.

Trading Yesterday For Another Tomorrow

Success; fame; and worldly gain sacrificed on the back of tomorrow.

Eyes wide shut plunging deeper into the abyss; today on yesterdays sorrow.

Too many were the times; too many the days laboring beneath the setting sun.

Could have been home; should have been home, but now, oh now it’s done.

So sad it is that I could not see; so sad in my quest; my desire for earthly things.

All that time; all those days, lost opportunity to share the love my Leah brings.

I thought I was right; I thought that by this I was meeting our every need.

I was wrong; that time is now gone and the missed yesterdays cause my soul to bleed.

I looked into her blue eyes this morning as I prepared myself for work.

I wept with inward sighs; longing, oh longing to give her all she deserves.

It’s my time; love; understanding and compassion, not a new car or big screen TV.

Oh all those years; all those days now gone when all she needed was me.

If I could take it back and do it all over again.

I would spend all my days and nights with my sweet Leah;

even if it meant living in a shanty beneath a roof of rusting tin.

For our time is so precious; it’s the most splendid of things.

And to share it with Leah…oh my sweet Leah,

the love of my life, the totality of my dreams.

There is truth in the words of Jesus when he says…

Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Matthew 6:19-21

There is truth in the words of that scripture...
You beautifully expressed them with your poem. Thanks always, for giving us your wisdom in hindsight...may we all learn from your words.

Allen, we cannot get back those days, hours, minutes, but we can live the time that we do have now, each day, each hour, each minute, that you have Leah with you, is precious..Learn from the past, spend your time with her and don't beat yourself up about the past, it is gone by, over, do not dwell, nor feel guilty, you aren't a person that can see the future so why punish yourself for living your life for that moment in time, just as you are living now with every breath that you can breathe with your precious love...
Make her happy and comfortable, that should be your mission (mantra)
so that you will be the best man you can be for her.
I wish you wellness, peace, love, and light,
Amber "V"

Allen,

Such wisdom in your lines: yes, we need to provide for our loved ones, but at what cost? Time well spent with them is far more valuable - a painful lesson, learned - but you can't beat yourself up about it - enjoy what you have NOW, with each other - well said.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I am not living under rusting tin, but the fiberglass roof of this beast ain't much better...and I now wish for just one of the good jobs that I gave up for the next better one, to be able to return as my finances are fast dwindling...Ed
