The Pittance Of Fools And Dreams

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

I have thought of what ifs…if I never were, then the picture above would have ceased to be. So no matter these ponderings I am ever so thankful that there was a Leah and me.

The Pittance Of Fools And Dreams

I wondered; I pondered; I thought and I dreamed.

What if of this world there never was a simple me.

Would Leah have married; would she still be a bride?

Would she have lived; or would she still have died?

For I wonder along these lines of printed streams.

If I never were, I could have never loved or dreamed.

Never would joy have come, nevermore the sunshine or rain.

Still moreover; there should nevermore a sorrow born of abject pain.

For if there was never a me oh what would this and Leah’s world be?

Would her smiles still stretch endless across the pale painted sky?

Or would it still of her days to be predestined to suffer and die?

What is to this hope of life did I with paltry ease lay before?

What to Leah’s sweet world did I leave in standing at the door?

For if there never was a me, there never would a life be.

Nevermore of joy to see; nevermore the need to be set free.

For what to her did I truly bring; to what purpose was this life?

If but for naught the world I valiantly fought, yet to still loose my wife?

Oh the pittance of fools and dreams, oh the shadows if there never was a me.

Oh the pittance of fools and dreams, oh the shadows if there never was a me.

Think on that and be thankful for what was and what still is and what will be forever.

What ifs would rob us of what is real. Be forever thankful for what was, and still is, real. Rebecca

Allen, we can spend a life time wondering "what if"....your life is now...don't let it pass you by.

As I read this... I wondered too.... What if....
You had passed first, and left Leah behind? Would you have wanted her to be in the painful place that you are now? Would you have wanted her to miss you, be inconsolable....be lonely, and wishing that she were gone with you? Would you have wanted her to stay here and try to find her way again....to struggle with living in the emptiness that the black hole of loss leaves within our heart? No... you would not. Sometimes, for reasons we cannot explain...God takes the ones he knows need peace...need to rest in His warmth... and he leaves those of us behind who are stronger...knowing that we still have much to teach...to learn.... I know this is no solace my friend...but... if I could have traded with my beloved, I would have in a second-----but-- I know he would never have wanted me to be left alone here on this earth never to have him hold me and give me strength again.... so... I live... I live.... I live.... not always so happy... but I live... and am thankful that my love is safe and well and doesn't have to hurt anymore. lindalaw

Could spend our lives wondering what if ... or we can thank God for what we've had. Few have experienced love as deeply, as passionately as you. Few feel pain as deeply, as passionately as you. You are a teacher on this unwanted road; continue to educate others how to grieve with grace. Because you're reaching me. Well written, my (((friend))). And thank you.

(((HUGS))) love and prayer, Karla.

I'm glad you knew Leah, loved her, stayed with her, even to the end; now that was true love in its purest form! May God bless you and help you to heal from your grief; you are ever in my prayers/thoughts, (((Dear Man)))!

Very well and powerfully written; well done!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :)

Love the piccy!
