Abstract Time

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

For those of you who have experienced the death of a spouse; then you know of these feelings. However for most, this is just an abstract thought; a thing that happens to other people and though there may be true heartfelt empathy for that person, it is truly too incredulous in that they understand. It has been four and one half months since Leah left me here all alone and just today a man remarked…”Wow, you sure seem to be taking this well”

Oh but if they only knew how long and cold this journey is. The days are empty and the nights even more so. There are though a few bright spots each day when I get a kind thought, a smile or a soft word in an email…but other than that it is so unimaginably lonely especially since they did away with everyone on my shift but me. They handed me a key to the plant and a flashlight in which to pierce the darkness and said…you are it.

Complete silence by day and now total silence by night. No one to call, no one to say hello…how are you….have you been OK….Therefore for those that have love….hold onto it with all your might…nurture it and watch it grow. Tend to it with care lest one day it too fails to live.

Abstract Time

I speak in soft whispers to the nothingness of the world around me.

Ghost ever present interplay on memories woven in the passages of time.

Long walks in the dark silence with a glimpse of light plays tricks on the mind.

I wonder about tomorrow and the emptiness on which it will still feed.

Dark are the dreams steal away in the night robbing me of much needed rest.

Yet come morning as I drink my coffee I always get a brief and momentary smile.

Suddenly, oh but for that white space in abstract time comes hearts tender best.

Your words continue to remind and teach us all to appreciate and hold tight to those we love while we can. Life is short...and fleeting. We never know when it will end.

I am treading that path too at the moment, so you have my full empathy...When this worst mightmare happens you feel your life will never be the same again...and it wont. Adjustment and healing will help..but a new life has to grow around the pain of loss...
Your words powerfully and painfully capture this strange and eerie time of early grief, and the tricks the mind plays...

I send you healing thoughts...and you are in my prayers..

Love, Diana

(((Allen))),

Until one walks in your shoes, they can't imagine the loneliness, the pain ... you convey it in lines of clarity, not abstraction. You remain in my heart and prayers -

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :(

Hey dude, what happened to that trip south, that might at least get you out of the doldrums...I think a change of scenery might be best for you, will not change the whole situation, but give you something new to look at...just a thought...Ed
