Poem Artwork

The Fingernail Of God

It was almost midnight and I had just retuned from work.

The heat of the day resonated like a voice into the night air.

I felt like the wildflowers of the field, worn, and wilted.

Exhaustion stole my feet as I again sought the comfort-

of my front porch swing to stave off the trials of the day.

Too hot to swing, too tired to even move-

I starred out across the woods listening to the sounds of the night.

That is when I saw it, the first sliver of the full July moon.

It peered at me through a tall oak, and I silently smiled.

This sliver of pale yellow also seemed to smile with me.

It was as if this speck of light read my mind.

It was like it knew what the full July moon meant to me.

It looked like a fingernail I thought….

Yes, it was the fingernail of God…a sign that dreams do come true .

I love those signs that the Lord sends us in the sky... My sign is given every once in a while in the wee morning hours as the sun rises...and when I see it, I know... and it brings me hope and peace and warmth and solace to an aching heart.
