Stroked Out

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

IT IS NOW 11:30PM IN South Carolina and the temp. is still 87 degrees with 70 percent humidity. The high today was 101 and we still had no air, thus the poem below. Can’t take the heat like when I was young. Guess I’ve grown soft, or my days nearly done.

Stroked Out

The town thermometer read 101…

I borrowed a window unit from my dad.

Had to have something or I would have been had.

Two hours spent in the noon day sun cleaning the unit was not fun.

I did have the help of John David, Jan’s well mannered son.

Yet before the unit was in, which in turn did not work.

I found my eyes grow dark against a scorching sky as I kissed the dirt.

Stroked out was I…the presence of death, ever nigh.

The fireman across the street and John David came to the rescue.

Then next door to my mother-in-laws house they carried me.

My head was burning from the inside out and I could hardly breathe.

On the floor of my mother-in laws did I now in silence lay.

Jan came running to my side and with cool cloths on my head as she and Ms. Looney prayed.

Never felt this way before as darkness danced before my eyes.

Oh the trials of these last two years have been more than I should survive.

Bless my neighbor’s heart as he went into town for a new unit.

He came back with a new one and installed it for me to boot.

I wrote him a check for 350.00, more than the unit itself cost.

I had to have some relief or all would have been lost.

Thank God now it is only in the house a reading of 82 where earlier it was 102.

Ah man, all that work for a croaked unit. I bet you would have cried had the heat not your tears all dried. Glad you recovered with no ill effect. Good neighbors are a precious commodity. Patrick

(((Allen))),

It's not just you. The older we get, the harder it is to take the heat (or cold or ...). You're ever in my prayers -- stay cool and stay safe. :(

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

This does not sound like a good day. Thank God for good neighbors.
God bless and cool it!

Hopefully it was just heat exhaustion and not heat stroke, though either could be a big problem...drink plenty of liquid and even though you got an a/c unit you should think about fans, at least the heat will be circulated a bit...PLEASE take care of yourself and keep that heat down there...Ed

Oh my Allen, you really need to be careful..thank goodness for family and friends..
Be sure to drink a lot of water and soak your feet in cold water.

Be well, my friend, be still, and stay cool!

Peace, love and light,
Amber
