The Gathering

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

As a rare Southern Christmas Day snow gently falls, I think upon the gathering of family. I think upon the past but more importantly I see the future. The young will grow old, and the old ones now will be as we…no more. However where there is love, where there is God…the gatherings will continue and we shall dream no more, but be united as one in both body and spirit. May your gathering be as blessed as mine was with our ever growing family…Love to you all; Allen, Jan, JD, and my children from afore.

The Gathering

Time, begets the ever knowing season, oh that elusive thing which capitulates for just a day.

Adults reminisce of old dreams as children beneath the Christmas tree play.

The table is laid out with the sweet colors of the season all red and green.

Old folks remember the Christmases of afore, and those of whom are no more.

Their memories drift like the soft smoke which climbs the chimney of youth.

They look to times of yore and the ghost of Christmas past, they smile and they dream; they see the future that in hope new gatherings store.

I view the scene in a sort of surreal way, I being of the old ones this Christmas day.

A light flurry of snow drifts past the windows of this sacred time.

I hold my children; I laugh, I reminisce and I am blessed.

Though what once was will be no more, life forever moves forward and I am happy in both heart and mind.

New love brings forth new hope and dreams of even brighter days.

For of my God who art in heaven, He has blessed me in so many ways.

Though I be of the old and remember the times which are no more.

I join in revelry this Christmas day and what future gatherings have in store.

For God is good in every way…His love for us is infinite, and not just on Christmas day.

God Bless you all, and Merry, Merry Christmas.
