Memory Resurrected
The silence of that Sunday morning still stings as she lay sleeping.
It was her birthday, but she knew it not as I stood by her bed weeping.
Morphine injections helped keep the indescribable pain she endured at bay.
The morning outside was warm; the birds did sing…yet I knew that this was to be our last Sunday.
Soon the silence of my home buzzed as an ambulance came to take her away.
The sound of death did battle with the static sounds of the machines that day.
One by one family came until we formed a united unbroken circle of ten.
We all sang to her beneath tears and broken voices happy birthday baby.
I knew it would not be long before it was time for her to finally go home.
With my heart breaking I thanked all for coming and asked them to leave her and me alone.
A lone nurse stood by my side with tears welling in her eyes as I nodded and mouthed the words, “Yes Please”.
With that she pulled the life sustaining plug and quietly left the room.
The air soon grew heavy; a haze filled this now somber place.
I felt God’s presence; I felt His peace as I leaned down to kiss her face.
My heart was still; as a thousand tears filled my eyes.
My lips met hers one last time as I mournfully said goodbye.
· Memories never die, though we create new ones every day. Through this memory resurrected I am reminded love even greater than I had ever loved before.
