Modern Romance, And Dinner For Two…

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Went out for dinner yesterday and saw pretty much what the photo implies…not with just one couple but with quite a few…I guess this really is modern romance…beats me though.

Modern Romance, And Dinner For Two…

He smilingly looks at her, and she at him.

But soon they forget their whimsical whim.

BUZZ BUZZ..ring-a-ding-ding.

He reaches for his phone, she reaches for hers.

Their starry eyed look fades quickly into a glazed blur.

Fingers fly in motion, eyes glued to the small amber screen.

She glances up at him; hides a smile while he continues to dream.

Peck-peck…tap tap…fingers continue to fly.

Texting and texting go them into the sweet bye and bye.

She puts down the phone and grabs the paper to read.

The waiter came by to ask if there is anything they need.

They both ignore him without as much as a glance.

He should have known not to intrude…after all…this is modern romance.

technology is certainly creating distance-and/or escape at times

Allen - You've captured in perfect satire an aspect of the wonders of technology that sometimes gives us more than we need. Love the title. Perfect. - David

A realistic look at modern romance gone astray. What ever happened to gazing into each others eyes with longing? One hopes that romance is not dead, but still thrives, even among the younger generation.

Sad, but true. Eye contact is fading fast. At least when texting is being used, other diners aren't hearing unwelcome phone conversations throughout the restaurant.
