Breakfast for Two; Day Two…Except Breakfast was ME!!!!

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Day two of our journey proved to be both exciting and frightening…Unlike day one…I just didn’t know that this time breakfast would be me, but that is later on this day. In the trip down on the old country roads I chose we encountered many great sights such as old graveyards filled with heroes and signers of the Declaration of Independence. We saw little country towns and old plantations as well. It was great and I can’t wait to see what day three will bring.

Finally we arrive at our destination and settled in for our stay. We began to relax by the ocean soaking in a certain peace that only the sea can provide.

Breakfast for Two; Day Two…Except Breakfast was ME!!!!

Oh what a feeling this has proved to this old tired soul to be.

With the soft smell of salt in the air and the constant call of the sea.

My mind is relaxed and the worries of the future seem to have passed away.

Then down to the beach I go with camera in hand, I capture the images of a sleeping day.

Then back to the pool I go to catch up with my sweet love Jan.

I’m waiting for the moon to rise and then grab my tripod was my plan.

But I had forgotten, I had forgotten and left it in the hotel room.

It was then without warning there was a burst of red on the horizon…It WAS the moon.

So out of the pool I climb, I grab my camera and to the beach I run.

The blood red moon was now in full view as I tried to adjust my shutter speed to be open longer since it was set earlier for the sun.

What a fool am I…I knew that without my tripod the moon would be but a blur.

Now in my desperate attempt to capture the glory of this sight.

I sit butt down in the sand and I raise my knees to steady my hand,

And that is when these certain critters known as sand fleas began to bite.

So determinate was I to capture the moon I endured and winced during the twenty second shutter speed in the agony of being eaten alive.

That is how on day two on our journey to the sea, that it changed from a sweet breakfast for two, unto and whereas breakfast, thanks to the moon and a thousand fleas became me.

Breakfast for two Day One

Sand Fleas are also known as “no-see-um” or “hop-along”, “sand fly”, “beach flea”. “biting midge” as well as a “punky”. They are annoying flea like parasites that can bite painfully and deeply. Their bite is most likely to be described as a sting and as they move along by packs of hundreds, they can cause a massive bite or sting attack together. They mostly feed early in the morning and at late at night on the beach and other sandy areas

You've vividly reminded me of some of my painful encounters with 'no-see-ums' and I now no longer take naps on beaches!
