Simple Morning Dreams

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Half way through cancer treatments am I this day as I ponder the morning from the back deck that I built with my own hands so many years ago when I felt young and strong…it still stands all 14x28...but so much… so much has changed. So many things that once were are now gone. Yet now in the midst of change I see new things being built of my future dreams.

Simple Morning Dreams

Simple pleasures come on a cool morning’s breeze.

The softness of the wind:

Conjuring up ghost of the past and embracing future dreams.

Morning birds flit lightly from tree to tree.

Songs in their heart, they bless my weary soul as they sing.

The coffee is strong, perhaps just a little bit too sweet.

I watch the steam form vanishing shapes as from the cup it does rise,

Drifting upward in the cool air towards the blue October sky.

Time, Oh, Time, how quickly into this day it should flee.

Off in the distance I hear a gathering of crows,

Their rhythmic cawing lay on these simple morning dreams,

Somehow their words unknown bring forth the essence of my being.

I feel closer to God on mornings rise, and He closer to me.

When only in the simple morning alone I slowly sip my coffee.

Oh, I hear the birds and see the squirrels at play…

And I dream…I dream and I dream.

I dream of feeling good again -

I dream of being Cancer free.

I dare only but to dream the dreams of better days,

When more simple mornings shall come such as these.
