Where Is The Damn Justice?

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

As I was leaving the Cancer Center today after treatment and pulling out of my parking space I noticed an elderly couple crossing the lot. He if I were to guess was in his mid-eighties and she maybe eighty herself. As I was about to enter into the main drive to exit the center I noticed out of the corner of my eye them both fall to the concrete and roll.

Normally this area is full of pedestrian traffic, but today no one was around. I stopped my car at once leaving the engine running and the door wide open. The old lady saw me coming and though I could not hear her words, I could see the fear in her eyes as her lips mouthed silently (HELP)…I looked around for assistance and saw none. I asked her if she was ok to which she replied “yes, I was just trying to get him to his chemo and he lost his balance and we both fell.

I then asked her if she felt like anything was broken and she said no, just please help me up. Still looking around for help since I had two people down…I still saw none. I then grasped her under her arms and told her to hold onto my elbows and gently lifted her. She at once went to her husband’s side to get him off the ground and I said wait…I then repeated the same questions I posed to her…anything broken…are you ok to which he replied yes.

I then told the old gentleman that I was going to bring him up into a sitting position to allow him time to regain his equilibrium. After completing this task, at last someone else came to our aide….STILL NO STAFF appeared. I sent him in for a wheelchair and when he returned we both lifted the poor fellow into the chair. We then got him into the center and he held out a hand of thanks and said thank you and God bless you to which I replied…you’re welcome and God Bless you.

Contradictory emotions ran through my mind as I returned to my still running car…where was the staff? Where is the damn justice?

Where Is The Damn Justice?

I looked into his steel gray eyes and saw the faint glimmer of youth.

His skin was rough and dry; his body now frail as his spirit softly cried.

In my mind I saw him once tall, proud and handsome.

But now…oh but now he lay on a sidewalk cold, broken and old.

I saw him once strong, but now he lay helpless and weak.

I saw his former youth in sad eyes that were soon, so soon to sleep.

Where, oh where is the damn justice in this thing called life?

Compassion burned alongside anger as I bore witness to his strife.

I held his hand in mine; he said God Bless you for what you’ve just done.

I smiled a little smile as I walked away and began my own track home.

Sadness filled my heart and tears warm and wet filled my eyes.

Where is the damn justice in living was the only thing that would cross my mind.

Your poem and its background is touching. Where is the Damn Justice? provokes some thought. But in this case "you were!" You gave this couple the help they needed at the moment they needed it and they gave you Gods blessing in return.

Thank goodness for wonderful men like you who will stop and help an elderly couple, many would not. I don't know what this sad, old world is coming to when we cannot help one another and love one another as Christ admonished us to do. A good, sad, but loving offering, Allen, thanks for submitting it.

This is very heart breaking. As a nurse, I wonder many times about what's taking place in this world. How can we not help those in need? Why don't we see when we look; or, why do we look yet see not...You have well written a poignant work. God bless your humanitarian heart. But for the grace of God, there go I........

Allen - you are a good man! Because of your caring actions at that brief moment you gave this man back his dignity. You were there at the right time, and yes "God Bless You."

A question I find I ask myself quite often these days. And God Bless those will still care about others.

Allen this is a timely write as our whole country is going to hell. The "Me First" that has been thrown around now for over ten years has hit home hard. The compassion and empathy that almost every American had in the 50's-- a lot still had in the 70's and almost none currently. GREAT JOB!
I have the pleasure of working with Rhonda and she filled me in on your current situation and am praying for a swift complete recovery

One day this too could happen to anyone of us and we too will think, 'Where Is The Damn Justice?' and will hope and pray that someone will be there to help us up...I thank God every day for sending me a man that not only is sweet, kind hearted, gentle and loving, but is also strong, take charge and knows what needs to be done and does it. Allen, I've told you several times and I'll tell you again, 'You are my HERO'.
