She Sat Alone

Today should have been all about her;

After all it was her birthday yet alone she did sit.

I watched her as she sipped on one cold beer after another.

I didn’t know her or her me.

I observed this from a distance,

as Jan and I dined on a big juicy steak.

I could only wonder why she sat alone.

After all this was her 42nd birthday.

I knew this because she announced it to everyone who passed by.

Her hair was neat, and she was dressed very nice.

But as she sat alone I could see the sad look within her eyes,

It made me ponder still; it made me wonder on this day, why?

Where are her friends, or even her children, if she had any?

I watched in somber silence as time after time she would announce

Time and time again to all that would hear…‘It’s my Birthday today’.

Now of this I really must admit that this sadness of this my heart did sway.

As we left and we passed by her way, I stopped and softly said to this stranger,

‘God Bless and I wish you a Very, Very Happy Birthday.’

Yes, so sad. It is very interesting because a longtime friend and private secretary, now a very successful lawyer, twice divorced, with an empty nest, has expressed an interest in “catching up” after several years. She wrote me and said that she is “coming over with lunch on her 53th birthday. It is very strange, that, although she is very successful, has many clients, colleagues, and friends, that she would want to spend her birthday with me.

Since my birthday is on that fateful 21st, I will break out some of that old wine and the two of us will discuss the end of the earth or our next trip together (on our last, many years ago, she cried on a romantic cruise in Emerald Bay, because she didn't have a man. My squeeze was with us then, and still is.

By the way, she is super smart, strikingly beautiful, and the years and tears don't show. Go figure.

So very sad, as was your message about poisoned cats. And your message prompted me to pen and post a poem this morning: Poisoning Our Planet
