Amazing Grace
2008, dark spirits covered the air.
Blackness like night brought deathly dreams of despair.
I saw ghost who lay sweetly on my bed.
Begging me now, come hither and kiss me once again.
I fought this battle in the darkness of night.
I fought it alone and never once again thought that I would see the light.
Then one rainy gloomy day, I got a smiley face, from a lady with no name.
I replied back and told her of what her kindness unto me did bestow.
It was hard to imagine that not long afterwards simple words of this sweet lady I would come to know.
I was skittish at first and somewhat quite reserved.
Yet it was as if God had spoken to her heart and said
‘This is the man you deserve.’
I remember to this day the words I repeatedly did say,
‘No promises, No commitments, lest I disappoint you in any way.’
Fragile was I; empty, hollow, ready to give up the ghost and ready to die.
Yet when we met for the very first time, even though I repeated the quote above,
I knew in my heart that she would forever and always be mine.
The smile on her face, the laughter in her voice,
brought sunshine to a life filled with darkness and void of choice.
She smelled of honeysuckle and jasmine after a soft southern rain.
She gently touched my hand and for a moment I felt like life had now lost it’s pain.
Now the years have past and together we still do stay,
We face our struggles like everyone else.
But she with her gentle touch, her soft laugh and the wink of an eye,
Makes my very day.
Pray tell where would I have been today
If I had not seen her little smiley face on my phone softly play.
Would have the darkness that surrounded me,
Sucked my soul across the abyss into darkness’s eternal hole.
Yet I know now that God has even greater plans.
For as He cares for the smallest of creatures,
He even cares more for man.
Thus Amazing Grace I must sing each and every day.
For instead of darkness; I see life, I see love, I see children laugh and dance in the soft summer rain.
So thanks be unto God for sending Jan, my sweet forever love this way.
She is my heart, my very soul
And in my sleep I taste her essence and together we as one are whole.
For despite our trials; we laugh, we smile and we joke everyday.
I once craved death yet God in His infinite wisdom has a better way.
Jan my love to you I dedicate this poem.
For you along with God saved me that day.
Thus all my mind can truly think and sing
Is ‘Amazing Grace and Glory to the King of Kings‘.

When I thought that I would never marry, Jan from my high school class came my way. I understood her perfectly, because she had much loss in her life. I needed her too, because of my creeping paralysis. She understood me imperfectly, and, after a brief, but wonderful honeymoon, she needed to free herself from me and my demons to address her own.
Jan has been replaced by a wonderful twenty year relationship. She was missed, but was not forever, like your Jan.
Thanks for sharing your happiness.
Ron
Peace, love and blessings to you and yours,
