Too Young To Be Old…

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

While playing with my great-granddaughter in our swimming pool, I realized I was too young to be old…or should I say, too old to be young. Still no matter the pain, it was lots of fun.

Too Young To Be Old…

This past Sunday I was blessed by my great-granddaughter’s presence.
I had just finished mowing my lawn after working a couple of hours at my job early in the morning of that same day.
I was prepared for a float and a relaxing yawn.

Yet come now the arrival of Alex full of spit and fire and a little bit of malice.
So this old man who felt like he was young,
Made a fool of himself beneath the August sun.

I played games with her, some of which I have never heard, Marco Polo was a game this old man did not deserve.
Then came the ballerina swirling and swinging of arms,
Riding on shoulders to which of my dismay brought me much harm.

Rambunctious was she as around and around the pool this old man did try to flee.
Nonetheless I came out injured and sore.
And I realized that this kind of behavior, this young/old man can not endure anymore.

When all was said and done.
A broken toe and sore muscles for her was worth all the fun.

For we are given very few times in life to enjoy our children while they are still children.
And be we young, or be we old,
We take the pain, the suffering and we rejoice for our days remain untold…

I love you Alex, even though with a broke toe, I love you so.

Aw, Allen, I'm sorry for your broken toe, but the emotion in this little ode is very touching. We want to give our all for these lovable younguns in our lives, and you did it this time.
The relationship is one to be treasured.

She does look a bit old to be carried around on your old shoulders. And a broken toe? I'm sure glad you had fun though. We have to get our fun when we can. Opportunities like that don't call along very often.

Why did you break your toe, that was kind of dumb...and you should know better than to be the horsie in the pool...-e-
