Soldier Boy
by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson
This picture is of Allen and his sister Karen while he was home on leave. Also my own brother (a year younger than me) was in the service at the same time. They both enlisted in the Navy summer of ‘75. I see the look on Karen’s face as she sees her brother in a different light and I wonder if this is what she is thinking as I thought the some of the same things when my brother came home on leave.
This is just a poem that came off the top of my head as we go through another year with love ones still on foreign soil not knowing what they are seeing or doing… if they will be the same when they get home.

Soldier Boy
She looks up at him and sees not the big brother that she adores.
Here stands a man that no longer jokes around.
He no longer dreams of cars, girls and fishing with his dad.
He hears not the music but the screams that strike his core.
She sees a familiar face, yet a stranger that she don’t know anymore.
It was just a year ago they were shooting hoops.
He was always there for her and gave her great advice.
He’s always been her hero, her brother and much more.
She sees eyes that have seen things that should never have been seen.
He looks at her and sees the faces of the dead.
He hears not her voice, but the sounds of the guns.
Lord why is this world so mean.
She sees shoulders standing tall and strong, but a soul that is crying.
He steps over old and young, lying in the streets.
He’s too young for war, why did he have to go?
Brother, go do what must be done, help win this war and get back home…
