Tick Tock

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

This was written on a napkin in a restaurant I was dining at. I had noticed a very old and frail women sitting alone at a table eating. She was entertaining herself by talking to someone that sat across from the table she was at, the only problem was....there was no one there (at least that I could see) So I penned this as she laughed and chatted to this unseen individual, all the time with sadness filling my heart as I watched this...I wanted to get up from my table and ask her permission to allow me to sup with her, but I was uncertian of what her reaction may have been...I wished I had taken a chance, for I have not seen her since. We should honor those such as these and treat them special in every way that we can, for someday......we.......

Poem Artwork

In the darkness of the night

She cried

Alone and without shame.

She longed for his loving touch

Or the gentle whisper of her name.

Time

Had taken its toll

And left her alone this way

With eyes

That grew dimmer by the day

With skin

That had lost its supple look

With limbs

That trembled and shook.

The years

Oh, how they had passed

Many with joy and laughter.

Recalling, but knowing it doesn’t last.

Now nothing but sorrows remain

And thoughts of the hereafter

Are hers to claim

At least over there

She will have no disdain

For this thing called time

Oh....

Curse this thing called

Time

For hers is now spent.

Tick-tock

Goes the clock

And tomorrow is the

Hereafter.

You have captured something Unique.
Few possess the ability to say
what you have said. You have talent.

You have captured so many occurrences in a daily life but you noticed this frail detail. It is a man of compassion who wrote this. You are blessed.
