Cast Aside

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

There is a poem that follows this Tirade…I promise

This poem is indeed intended as an indictment against companies (Large Corporations) who have in their never ending desire for the almighty dollar, forsaken the very ones that helped turn those profits for years. With CEO’s and VP’s just to name a few, hauling in multi million dollar incentive packages. The average worker has not seen at more than a 2.5% increase in their pay the last five years. You figure on this some and then add in the millions of workers that are being forced out the door because of their age…yes their age, and before you say (there are laws against age discrimination)…remember that these laws are made by those that have the best interest of the mega corporation at heart. An older worker is more expensive to maintain, their insurance is higher, they have more paid days off, so therefore, from a money point of view, it is more economically feasible to release these workers and retain the younger ones. There was once a time when a company and its shareholders were content with a 35% return on their dollar, but now in this age of greed, they demand no less than a 65% return on the dollar. To achieve this, they have to make cuts. The first cut is the labor. The workforce is reduced by 30% thus requiring the remaining 70% to pick up the slack. This eliminates those who have been with the company for years. For they often are unable, keep up with the demands of running several jobs at once. If that does not work, and their monetary profit is not where their greed is not met they close the entire operation down and send it overseas where the wages are three bucks a day

Broken in body and left to my own device

I crawl in silence toward the fading light.

Left now upon this vile heap of inhumanity,

I was cast aside without regard, into the night,

Cast aside by the very ones that once pretended to care.

I now make my way across the drying bones

Of those which were broken before me and left to die.

 Oh,

This is a wasteful and wretched land

that stretches as far as the eye can see,

It is land that gives not,

for this is a land that only takes,

a home to those forsaken.

 Without Shame

 They borrow of your youth

and pay you a meager sum,

Then they greet you with disdain

if their productions not met nor done.

For the years have gone by,

And in strength and ability, you’re not the same.

It is more youth that they now need,

More youth that can pull their train,

For their company cannot succeed,

Or even maintain their mansions and estates,

If they must keep in their words, “Dead Weight”

So cast aside we now are,

for we have reached our peak.

Cast aside, thrown away,

Left to rot… left to decay.

This was inspired by the reduction of force at my work.

I've seen this everywhere. The big boys know nothing of the stress thay cause on others. What happens to the mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers who go to bed hungry and without medicines so way out into space they can no longer afford it. This country has died from greed. I hope it only sleeps for a while. There isn't much future for anyone here unless they are wealthy.Your poem may help steer someone and that would be a start.
