In the softness of a warm spring day,
Rex and I sit on the park bench
And listen as the children run and play.
Games of my youth all unfold for me to see.
All mixed with laughter and cheer.
I listen as they run in playful circles,
over the hills both far and near.
"Ahh, but to be a child again," I say
As I reach, down and rub Rex between his ears.
I had So much fun, and nothing in life to fear.
I recall them well old pal, yes, I remember well those days
Long before, you came into my life to show me the way.
"Hey mister" I heard a child say from behind,
"Tommy over there says you cannot see,
And that you are blind,
And that dog you have is how you really see."
"Tell me mister, is it so, I really want to know"
"Pull up a seat son" I heard myself say,
And I will tell you a truth as you sit here today.
For it is true , I do not see like Tommy and you.
And my friend here is a true pal,
He guides my way in life through and through.
Though I cannot see with these two eyes,
I have something special that helps me survive.
Its an inner eye that no one can see,
And it allows me to live my life and be free.
For I can tell you the colors of today's sky,
By the smell of the wind as it whispers by.
I can tell you of the boys in the field at play,
By the sounds of the noise that they make.
For, there are many things in this life that I see,
Even though to many I am blind and deserve pity.
But pity me not son, for my life is full and plumb.
I have Rex, and he is a true friend to me,
Yet, still I have an inner eye that sets me free.
I can travel all over this world, I can cross rivers,
And climb mountains and swim the deepest sea.
Though I be blind I can do all this
from the eye of my mind.
So now you see, son,
Though these two orbs do not shine,
And Rex here is my guide,
I really am not as they say…
No, never was I ever blind.
