Silent Night

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Far too often, there are those that are forgotten

Saturday, December 20, 2003

“Silver bells…silver bells” and “dashing through the snow”

went the melody, that played on the old radio.

as the old woman sat alone by the candles solemn glow.

“Dreaming of a white Christmas” and “Little drummer boy”

continued the tune, as she with tender care, tied the Christmas bow.

Upon the mantel sat a spindly cloths hanger tree,

adorned with ornaments, of an old woman’s dreams.

her hands were gnarled by unkindly time,

As she placed tiny toy soldiers, in a ridged strait line.

Hobbling back now to her rocking chair,

She sat alone and cried, “does it matter, and does anyone care”?

“Little town of Bethlehem” sounded the melody still,

as the old woman pulled up her shawl, over her dress thread bare,

she asked again in a still louder voice, “I said, does anyone care”?

Yet no answer came her way,

As she in the cold of the room,

Quietly passed away,

“Silent night, oh holy night…all is calm”…..

this melody did play.

It's difficult to type to a screen when the eyes are clouded by tears....but I'll try to tell you, if I can, how this piece touched me. I can see myself here....in not too many years hence --- and can see so many others who are left to the loneliness of old age. This is so very sad, and so very well done. Thanks for the tears, dear Poet.

Allen the poignancy of this one tore me up...I used to volunteer in a nursing home, and this was so prevalent, when families never came to visit... You have a very compassionate heart and you write about things so beautifully...Thank you for sharing...

Well, you've touched on a sad side to life. Loneliness is endemic in our society and unhappiness flourishes like mold spores after a rain.
