Sounding Off

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

I often like to write in secluded cafe's where there is an influx of people to observe, for I get a good deal of inspiration this way....but today...it frankly got on my nerves...children crying and adults screaming at the kids to be quiet...aghhhh...so this is the write that came from this experience, ....I recall someone once saying....be careful what you pray for...you may get it.

Noise to some, can be pleasure to another.

What may be music to the ear of one

can cause tension and pain in others.

This is a subject that I must think on,

For can’t you see, it’s the noise that bothers me.

Oh, so selfish that this wretch, I call me

That its not the noise that troubles me.

I must dig deeper and search my soul

for the true cause of my turmoil.

Oh, how bitter I must be

When I see children laughing…

and I lament, “ bothers me.”

What kind of monster, am I ,

That I become upset to hear a child cry?

How miserable I must be

When I despise the sound of someone

Being happy.

Surely, I must self examine

And discover the secret to my misery.

If I think long and hard… think, I cannot.

Too much noise surrounds me…

But wait, for I did pray….and now

there is silence, for I hear no sound.

Oh, what peace this must be.

Stone cold silence… I am at last free.

But Lord… Lord, I cannot hear!

This is not what I meant it to be.

for now It’ the quiet that drives my fear.

Oh, how, I miss the sound that was a part of me…the sound of life.

The sounds, that I so casually said caused me strife.

Never happy! This wretch of me !

I prayed for peace and quiet,

And it was Silence that He granted me.

Oh woe, is me!

Always quite quiet here in the campground Allen, so much so that it almost invokes some fear as you have felt, only noise is that of Nature...which is quite so soothing...another great one from a great one, now get back to your canvas and paint...Peace from soggy NJ, Ed & Rufuz

Nice write. I can understand your frustrations as I also tend to write in crowded places whilst watching people interact around me. However, in my case it is usually in bars at evening with everyone gettin drunk around me and the jukebox blasting out loud music. I simply learned to turn off the background noise in my mind.

Oh boy, do I connect with this one. Yikes! But hey, what would we write about, if not mixed thoughts? (lol) Good work.

Woe, indeed...J. Allen...that I know all too well.
I yearn for solitude, then write poems about loneliness
when the silence gets to me.
We poets are enigmas...that's for sure!
